Robert M. Dow, Jr. has served as a United States District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois since December 2007 and concurrently as Counselor to Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. since December 2022. Judge Dow served on the Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Civil Rules from 2013 to 2022 and the Advisory Committee on Appellate Rules from 2010 to 2013. He has sat by designation on the Sixth and Seventh Circuits and is a member of the American Law Institute. He teaches complex litigation at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law.

Before entering judicial service, Dow was a partner in the Chicago office of Mayer Brown LLP, specializing in appellate litigation. Judge Dow is a graduate of Yale College (B.A. 1987), the University of Oxford (M. Phil 1990; D. Phil. 1997), and Harvard Law School (J.D. 1993). He clerked for U.S. Circuit Judge Joel M. Flaum in 1993–94.
