In his 2019 Year-End Report on the Federal Judiciary, Chief Justice John Roberts focused on the urgent need for more and better civic education. Reinforcing the perspective of the Chief Justice, subsequent Strategic Plans for the Federal Judiciary have all highlighted the importance of preserving public trust, confidence, and understanding of the judiciary through involvement in civics education by judges and judiciary employees. This opening session underscores the importance of increased public knowledge of the role and function of the judiciary and how decreased awareness threatens the long-term ability of the courts to function effectively.
